Safety & Compliance 101: A Panel Discussion

This course provides a foundational understanding of playground safety, compliance, and standards relevant to landscape architects involved in the planning and design of public play environments. Led by two seasoned members of IPEMA’s Equipment Certification Committee, this interactive panel discussion explores critical topics including hazard identification, injury prevention, inspection and maintenance practices, and the application of key safety standards such as ASTM F1487, ADA, and CPSC guidelines. The session will also examine international standards (EN 1176, CSA Z614), current and upcoming changes to safety regulations, and the balance between risk, compliance, and play value. Participants will gain actionable insights into best practices for designing safe, compliant, and enduring play spaces.

At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

Define the core components of a safe and compliant playground, including hazard testing methods, maintenance protocols, and key design considerations.
Identify and interpret relevant U.S. and international safety standards (e.g., ASTM F1487, ADA, CPSC, EN 1176) and their implications for playground design and compliance.
Apply best practices for equipment selection, layout, and supervision strategies to minimize injuries while maintaining developmental and play value.
